The new North Dakota legislative session is still four months away and sitting lawmakers are already talking about property taxes.
Always a hot topic, property taxes came to front of this election season when petitions started circulating around the state to place an initiative on the ballot that would repeal all property taxes.
That petition did not receive enough signatures to make the November election but in its absence congressional leaders are considering cementing the Mill Levy Buy-down as a permanent law. Fong says that the current system is better for the state than a full repeal of property taxes.
Fong says that the “three-legged stool” approach keeps the state from being too dependent on fickle industries such as oil or farming.
